PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Nestled at the bottom of a 1.5 acre lot, this guest house was designed to compliment the primary home and provide sanctuary from the heat of the desert in Rancho Mirage, California.
The butterfly roof allows thoughtfully placed clerestories to bring in views of the surrounding San Jacinto mountains, while also hinting at the storied history of mid-century modern architecture in nearby Palm Springs.
Heat is captured then stored in the solid concrete wall anchoring the home, providing passive cooling during the days and heating overnight. Combined with large overhangs, the home uses multiple design solutions to reduce the impact of the extreme desert temperatures in a minimalist aesthetic.
